Why WordPress?

First started in 2003, WordPress is one of the most commonly used website creation systems in the world. 43% of all websites in the world run on WordPress (as of December 2023).

That’s close to 500 million of the estimated 1.1 billion websites in existence in the world today, even though only just under 20% of all sites on the Internet are actively maintained.

Why WordPress? Logo

So let’s just make it easy and say that 100 million out of a total 230 million active websites are using WordPress. No point arguing over a few million, is there.

WordPress.org vs WordPress.com

It’s important to point out that we’ll be using the FREE WordPress.org version for your website, not the paid or advertising supported WordPress.com.

The underlying technology for both of these versions is the same. You can think of the paid version a bit like Wix or Squarespace – it is artificially limited in its functionality in order to make it easier to manage and keep secure, and you pay for this hand-holding.

You don’t have to worry about this though. I will teach you how to make the free version of WordPress just as secure with barely any extra effort.

The benefits of using WordPress

Using a system as popular as WordPress for your website immediately gives you a few benefits:

  • Support: There are thousands of web designers and developers out there who can help you with any issue you might run into. This includes web hosting providers: every mainstream host supports WordPress.
  • Documentation: While the sheer amount of documentation out there might be a little overwhelming, you will never be alone when you have to find out how exactly a specific functionality works.
  • Security: The system and the plugins we’ll use are constantly monitored for security issues, and fixed if any problem is found.
  • Flexibility: There is almost no functionality and design that doesn’t exist for WordPress. While some of the more outlandish functionalities might be a bit more complex to implement, there is virtually nothing it can’t do.

The drawbacks

There honestly aren’t many, but let’s look at a couple…

  • Too much choice: Because of the amount of themes and plugins available, it’s not always easy to immediately pick the solution that’s right for you. But that’s what I’m here to help you with, and you can always change to another theme or plugin.
  • Too much documentation: Similar to the above, it can be difficult to find the correct documentation for the problem you’re researching. Always check how old an article and how skilled a specific author is, but you’ll figure it out soon enough.

Summary: Free, well-supported, secure

Honestly, in my opinion there isn’t a better way to build a website for a small to medium business than with WordPress.

Once you can afford your own design and development team, yes, you can build something better, but until then there is no better alternative.
